Ezra's Hidden Travis T Tattoo

Ezra’s hidden Travis ‘’T’’ tattoo was a permanent memorial tattoo that Ezra Cruz commissioned after Travis Yoon died in August 2025. Cass, the Evanston artist who had previously made Ezra’s wrist notation tattoo, preserved the capital ‘’T’’ from Travis’s handwritten name on one of his score pages and integrated it into notation from the same page. The finished mark read as music unless the viewer knew where to find the letter.

Design and Source Material

Ezra rejected a literal ‘’T’’ paired with a heart. He wanted Travis’s name present without turning the relationship into an image that explained itself to strangers. Cass used the horizontal stroke of Travis’s handwritten capital as a beam and aligned its downstroke with a note stem. The surrounding notation retained Travis’s own musical marks, allowing the letterform to disappear into the score without losing the irregularities of his handwriting.

The design came from Travis’s work on ‘’이어받은 선율’‘, the collection he completed during leukemia treatment with Ezra serving as his notation scribe. Unlike the wrist tattoo, which reproduced three complete measures exactly as they appeared in Sibelius, the later design combined two elements from one handwritten source page: Travis’s name and his music.

Consultation with the Yoon Family

Before scheduling the appointment, Ezra showed the design to Eun-joo Yoon, Sung-ho Yoon, Hana Yoon, and Soon-ja Yoon. He treated their approval as part of the design process because the mark represented their son, brother, and grandson as well as his partner. Cass did not ink the final version until the Yoons had seen it and given Ezra their blessing.

Acquisition

Ezra returned to Cass after Travis’s death. Cass had understood the first tattoo as a living promise rather than a memorial; the second appointment carried no such distinction. Travis had seen the notation around Ezra’s wrist, held it over his pulse, and helped continue the phrase it preserved. He would never see the hidden ‘’T’‘.

Meaning and Long-Term Significance

Ezra used tattooing as one form of artistic and emotional processing. Music gave emotion sound; tattoos gave experiences a permanent physical form that he could carry after the immediate moment had ended. His ink documented people, inheritance, promises, and losses rather than functioning only as decoration.

The two Travis tattoos remained deliberately separate. The wrist notation marked what Ezra had witnessed and promised while Travis was alive. The hidden ‘’T’’ was the memorial: Travis’s own hand and music preserved together after his death. People without the design’s history generally saw notation; the people who knew Travis and the source page could identify his initial inside it.
